RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

At Vimy Ridge Academy everyone in our school community has the right to learn and work in an environment that is respectful, safe, healthy and focused on learning and success. In order to preserve these rights, students must also be aware of their individual responsibilities.

Vimy Ridge Academy staff will support high performance learning opportunities at our school by providing encouragement, praise, awards, and individual recognition, including referrals to the administration regarding the many positive behaviours and academic gains of our students.

In addition to this, the staff will enhance communication between the home and school by communicating to our parents the progress of their young people. This will come in the form of encouraging telephone calls, positive notes home and/or reinforcing parent/teacher/student conferences.

In our C.O.R.E values that guide our students to meet the expectations of our learning community. These values ensure a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.

C – Commitment: To Excellence in Academics and Athletics

O – Ownership: Ownership and Responsibility for Behaviour, Reputation, and your Future

R – Respect: Respect yourself, Peers, Staff, and Community

E – Engagement: Engage in Every Lesson, Every Activity, Everyday with a Positive Mindset

We are the Raiders at Vimy Ridge and we believe in a community of excellence. We seek to ensure a safe, positive, respectful and productive school climate and culture, where high expectations are set for academic achievement and behaviour while supporting students to strive to excel in their individual athletic programs.

As a District, we have established clear behaviour expectations for all students, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The expectations are outlined in the District’s Student Behaviour and Conduct Policy which was developed in consultation with students, parents, staff and community members. The policy outlines the rights and responsibilities of students, our expectations for student conduct, and the potential responses when students demonstrate unacceptable behaviour.

Student Dress Code

The Vimy Ridge  student dress code strives to accomplish several goals:

  • Maintain a safe learning environment in classes where protective or supportive clothing is needed, such as chemistry/biology, dance (bare feet, tights/leotards), or PE (athletic attire/shoes).
  • Allow students to wear clothing of their choice that is comfortable.
  • Allow students to wear clothing that expresses their self-identified gender.
  • Allow students to wear religious attire without fear of discipline or discrimination.
  • Include restrictions that ensure school safety is a priority. We do not allow hoodies to be worn in school so that we have visibility to identify visitors to our school when necessary. Headwear that is religious or cultural in nature is supported.
  • Prevent students from wearing clothing with offensive images or language, including profanity, hate speech, and pornography.
  • Prevent students from wearing clothing with images or language depicting or advocating violence or the use of alcohol or drugs.
  • Ensure that all students are treated equitably regardless of gender/gender identification, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body type/size, religion, and personal style.
  • Ensure that all students are dressed for success academically, athletically, and that they present themselves in a respectful and professional manner.
