Our activity-focused campus offers unique and compelling sports, dance and pursuits programs within a thriving academic community in a small school environment. Student achievement at VRA is equal to, and often superior to, that of larger schools.

With the 2017-2018 school year well underway, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all students, their families and staff to what promises to be an exciting and rewarding school year at Vimy Ridge Academy.  It’s hard to believe that two months have passed us by, but we are off to a great start and with term one about to wrap up, the students and staff are nicely settling in for what promises to be another successful year at Vimy Ridge.

It is my privilege to serve as principal at Vimy Ridge, and I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you.  By working together, we can ensure that your children are striving to reach their potential and that they have a successful school year.  I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to drop by the school if you have any questions or concerns regarding your son’s or daughter’s progress throughout the year.

In addition to our sports specific programming and training, as well as our dance program, our focus at Vimy Ridge Academy continues to be on academics.  Character Education is very much a contributing factor for the development of well-rounded students, so the C.O.R.E. values we have adopted, emphasizing Citizenship, Opportunity, Respect, and Enthusiasm, are essential to the culture at Vimy Ridge Academy. I have been so impressed with the respectful young adults who attend our school each day.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome and introduce some new additions to our staff and programming. Joining the Vimy Ridge Academy staff this year are Mr. Brad Whittingham (Social/Outdoor Pursuits), Ms. Jill Chmilar (Math/Hockey), Mr. Ian Barteaux (Science/Hockey), Mr. Kevin Bissoon (Math), Ms. Barbara Fu (Distance Learning), Ms. Tanya Palmowski (ISP), Ms. Annalise Schellenberg (Soccer) and Mr. Jim Ashton (Math). In our Student Services department, Ms. Megan McGrath has joined us as a Success Coach. This year we are excited to welcome Martin Andersen – Director of Green and Gold Soccer—to our Sports programming.  As well, we are once again working with the Okanagan Hockey Academy, providing the educational component for their Midget Prep team (Randall Weber – Head coach), Midget Elite 15 team (Ryan Allen – Head Coach) and Bantam team (Sean Beissel – Head coach). New this year, we are working with the University of Alberta to provide sports programming for students in Rugby and Curling. In addition, we have a new face in the main office – Ms. Stacey Sockman, our Admin Assistant. Welcome to Vimy!

We are now in the final phase of our modernization, which should be wrapping up this month. Vimy’s “new look” has been receiving very positive feedback from students, staff, parents and the community. I would like to thank the students, staff and parents for their patience, understanding and cooperation over the past two and a half years as we transformed Vimy into a “state of the art” facility. The school looks fantastic; it is one that we can all be very proud of to call home.

The staff and I are looking forward to a great year and I am confident that through our commitment to work together, we will celebrate a year filled with excellence in achievement and positive relationships, and our students will continue to be contributing citizens to the learning community at Vimy Ridge Academy.

Best wishes for a very successful year.
