Academic Enrichment Program (AEP)

Opportunity for Junior High Students

Academic Enrichment Program (AEP - Formerly  Honours Programming) offers Grades 7–9 students challenging academic experiences by deepening their learning in the core subjects of Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts and Social Studies. It helps prepare junior high students for academic programming in high school, including Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB). Learn more about the program to help decide if Academic Enrichment is the right choice for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions
About AEP for Junior High students at Vimy Ridge Academy

  • How many AEP spaces for students?
For grade 7, Vimy Ridge runs two AEP classes. This means that there are approximately 60-80 open spots spread across two classes. Often, we will add a third AEP class for grade 9.

  • To apply for AEP, do I need a reference letter from a teacher?
A reference is not required from your current teacher, and it would not impact your admission into the program. Selection to AEP is based primarily on student grades.

  • Can you still go into high school AP classes if you weren’t in AEP?
Yes. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are open to all students, even if they did not take AEP in junior high. AP courses are designed for students who wish to engage deeply with the subjects they are passionate about and who wish to prepare for university.

  • Can anyone get into AEP or is it program dependent?
AEP is open to students of all programs. Courses are offered both in the morning and afternoon to accommodate all students.

  • When looking at student grades, how does the letter system work?
When we look at student grades, we are looking for grades above 80% in all four core subjects. For letter grades, this means that we are looking for a grade of A in all subjects.

  • What happens if we don’t have a grade in a particular class yet, for example in Gym?
Entry into AEP is dependent on student grades in the four core subjects (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math). If there is no grade available for these courses, it is possible that we check later in the year, or request updated reports when available.

  • Which report card do you use?
Parents/students are asked to submit their most recent report card. This is what we use for entry into the program. If there are significant changes over the course of the year, parents may contact us. If a student is close (or, “on the bubble”), we have access to the most recent reports for students in an EPSB school.

  • When do you find out if you are accepted into the AEP program?
All students who apply for AEP will receive an email in late-May or early-June. This email will either outline their acceptance to the program or their rejection.

  • Are students required to take a second language?
In junior high, all students are required to take a second language. Vimy offers both French and Spanish as choices. Students will take a language for one semester of the year, and the other semester will contain their option courses (Foods, Construction, etc.).
